How to Spring Clean Your Home with a Dog

As the clocks spring forward and days get longer, it’s the perfect time for that satisfying deep spring clean. If you share your home with a four-legged friend, there are some additional considerations you should keep in mind when cleaning your home, and it could be the perfect time to freshen up their many toys and accessories.

We consulted our in-house vet, Alison, for her top tips on spring cleaning your home with a dog. Read on to discover how often you should be washing certain items, what cleaning products to avoid, and how to know if your pup may be suffering from a household allergy.

How do I keep my dog preoccupied whilst I clean?

Before you tackle your to-do list, consider taking your dog out for a long walk or a play session to help tire them out. This way, they’re more likely to settle down and stay safe while you work with potentially hazardous cleaning products. You could also set up a cosy, safe spot for them with their favourite blanket and toy.

How Often Should I Wash My Dog’s Bowls?

Just as we wash our plates and bowls after each use, it’s important to do the same for your dog. Alison recommends washing your dog’s food and water bowls daily to remove food debris and minimise the risk of harmful microorganisms. Yes, even if it’s licked clean! A deep clean by hand is the best method to ensure it’s sparkling clean and ready for their favourite time of the day.

How Often Should I Wash My Dog’s Bed?

The frequency of washing your dog’s bed can vary based on their coat type, dirtiness from outdoor activities, and allergies. The goal is to provide your dog with a clean, comfortable, and safe resting place after a day of adventuring. Vacuuming weekly and washing as needed is typically effective. Always check the laundry care label and use a pet-safe detergent.

How Often Should I Wash My Dog’s Toys and Accessories?

Toys that are frequently played with should be washed weekly, and you should wash your dog’s collar at least once a month (maybe more if your dog is fond of muddy puddles). It’s a good idea to clean off any food, dirt, or debris whenever you spot it. How you should best wash your dog’s collars depends on the material. Some materials can’t withstand the washing machine, such as leather, so consider a gentle hand wash with pet-safe detergent or soap.

Are Cleaning Products Safe to Use Near Dogs?

Many cleaning products, such as standard laundry detergent and oven cleaner, can be toxic to dogs if ingested or inhaled. Always store cleaning products securely out of your dog’s reach, and read the labels to ensure you use them safely. Before cleaning, remove your dog from the area and ventilate the space. Remember that dogs tend to lick their paws and fur, so it’s crucial to thoroughly wash the floors after using potentially toxic products on them. Whenever possible, opt for non-toxic or “natural” cleaning agents instead of harsh chemicals. Some chemicals to avoid include bleach, ammonia, formaldehyde, phenol, and isopropyl alcohol.

What Household Allergies Should I Look Out for With My Dog?

If your dog is exhibiting signs like itchy skin or ears, irritation, sneezing, or excessive grooming, they may have an allergy. Common household allergens for dogs include house dust mites, storage mites, moulds, and pesky fleas. These allergens can significantly impact your dog’s well-being and can be a year-round issue. If you suspect your dog has allergies, talk with your vet. Our in-house vet, Alison, is also on hand to help.
