Attending Your First Dog Agility Competition

Everything you need to know to register and compete with the Kennel Club.

Most people who get involved in agility don't start out with an intention to compete; they go to have fun and find competing to be an extension of it.&nbsp;There is not as much of a divide between competitive agility and just-for-fun agility as you might expect. Most trainers use standard Kennel Club equipment, including jumps, tunnels, weaves, the dog walk, A-frame and see-saw.&nbsp;The competition formatAt Kennel Club competitions, dogs are divided into four categories: small dogs jump 30cm, medium dogs jump 40cm, intermediate dogs jump 50cm, and large dogs jump 60cm. Dogs have an official measurement before competing to determine the height category in which they will run.&nbsp;&nbsp;There are seven grades, or levels, of competition. New handlers and dogs begin at level one and progress through the grades.&nbsp;&nbsp;Dogs do not need to be any particular breed or even purebred to do agility. If your dog is of a mixed breed, you simply register them with the Kennel Club's Activity Register to begin entering competitions. If your dog already has Kennel Club pedigree papers, there is no need to do this.&nbsp;&nbsp;How to find competitionsEach weekend, agility competitions take place all around the country, most of which are open to spectators.&nbsp;The easiest place to find a comprehensive list is <a href="https://www.agilitynet.co.uk/clutch/shows.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">here.</a>&nbsp;What to expect on the dayDuring a typical day, your dog will have three or four runs, each over a different course (16-20 obstacles). As a competitor, you begin by walking the course alongside other entered handlers. During the course walk, you figure out the route your dog needs to take around the numbered obstacles.&nbsp;When it's your turn, you aim to complete the course as quickly as possible without incurring any faults (dropped poles, for example). Each run is timed with electronic timing gates, and the fastest clear wins.&nbsp;"Big" agility events to aim forCrufts is held every March and is one of several annual flagship events in the UK. The other notable event is Olympia in December. Who doesn't love to twirl and spin? It’s such a fun and freeing movement and is quite a simple and impressive move to teach your dog.&nbsp; Here to take us through a step-by-step guide to teaching your dog how to spin is Diane, our Canine Behaviourist and owner of Superhounds.&nbsp; “Spin is a great trick that you can use on its own or added into your loose lead walking to make things a bit more exciting. It not only keeps your dog’s focus, but it also teaches body awareness and proprioception. It can be beneficial to dogs of all ages, from puppies through to elderly dogs.”&nbsp;

The ultimate goal of spin is to have your dog completing 360° spins in either direction on a verbal command. Watch the video and follow the steps below.&nbsp;

Step 1:&nbsp;With your dog standing in front of you, present a tasty treat (like these ones from our <a href="https://www.differentdog.com/recipes/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Different Dog Shop</a>) and display in front of your dog’s nose.&nbsp; Step 2:&nbsp;Take the treat towards your dog’s right shoulder as they move their head in a clockwise direction, mark, and reward.&nbsp; Step 3:&nbsp;Remember to keep the treat at shoulder height – too high and your dog will sit or jump up, too low and your dog may lie down or not follow the treat.&nbsp; Step 4:&nbsp;Once your pup is following the food, bring your hand around to your dog’s rear end to encourage a full turn of their body.&nbsp; Step 5:&nbsp;Now you’ve got the spin behaviour, you can do a few more and reward the tight spins.&nbsp; Step 6:&nbsp;You can now start to phase out the lure (the treat in your hand). Continue to make the same action with your hand but mark and reward once your dog has completed a full spin.&nbsp; Step 7:&nbsp;When you are confident that your dog knows what the action is, you can start putting the word to it by saying ‘Spin’ as they turn.&nbsp; Step 8:&nbsp;Once you have mastered this you can start to reduce the hand signal until your dog is spinning just on the verbal cue.&nbsp; Step 9:&nbsp;You can now do the same with the ‘Twist’ action – a 360° in an anti-clockwise direction!&nbsp; Ready to learn another trick? It all started around the kitchen table after Charlie returned from visiting a dog food manufacturer. His job working for a leading pet retailer allowed him to see behind the scenes, but as he drove home he couldn’t help but feel unsettled about what he had seen. Surely this brown processed pellet isn’t the best for our beloved dogs? Feeding dogs highly processed food felt inconsistent with the way Charlie and Alex lived their life. Having a young family they believed in feeding fresh and wholesome home cooked meals, focusing on quality of ingredients. Why should this mindset stop with their dog Crumble? One of the most important members of their family. This was a lightbulb moment for Charlie and Alex which started this crazy but amazing journey. They started cooking for Crumble, then friends of Crumbles and then friends of friends- and before they knew it, it snowballed! In 2016 they set out to challenge the dog food industry by bringing out their very own dog food, a dog food which did everything differently! And so, Different Dog was born. In honour of Crumble’s birthday and National Peanut Butter Day, we made some tasty peanut butter treats. They are delicious and super easy to make – follow our simple steps below! <h3>Ingredients</h3> <ul><li>180g cups rolled oats</li><li>85g peanut butter (make sure your peanut butter has just peanuts as an ingredient and no salt or other extras)</li><li>2 bananas (the riper the better)</li></ul> <h3>Ready, Steady, Bake</h3> <ol><li>Preheat the oven to 170 degrees celsius</li><li>Blend the oats until a flour like consistency</li><li>Add the peanut butter and banana and mix until a dough forms</li><li>Pop the dough onto a clean surface and roll out until it is about 5mm thick</li><li>Cut into shapes and place on a lined baking tray</li><li>Place in the oven and bake for 20-30 minutes. Keep an eye on them</li><li>Once cooled store them in an air tight container and let your dog enjoy!</li></ol> Crumble loved her special birthday treats and we really hope your dogs do too. This could lead to dehydration, resulting in a lack of energy and loss of appetite for your dog.

<h2>Is Fresh Dog Food the Best Choice for Your Dog?</h2>Unlike kibble, freshly cooked dog food is packed full of high-quality, natural ingredients gently cooked at a low temperature to retain their high nutritional value. How to teach your dog the ‘Play Bow’ command

You may have already seen your dog doing the ‘bow’ on their own accord – it’s the morning stretch where their hind legs are extended, and their front legs are on the floor. And that well-known stance when they’re about to start an epic game of play with their best friend. But play bow can also be taught with a command – it’s a great stretch for your dog either on or off equipment and a doggy core strengthener too. Diane, our Canine Behaviourist and owner of Superhounds teaches you how to master it below. Paws up if you’re in!

First you need to think of what cue to use for this trick. Be mindful that if you use the word “down” to ask your dog to lie down, they might get confused with the word “bow” as it sounds similar. Using a command such as “curtsy”, “stretch” or even “ta-dah” are brilliant alternatives. Watch the video and follow the steps below.

Step 1:Get your dog to stand in front of you, facing you, and hold a yummy treat just in front of his nose.&nbsp; Step 2:&nbsp;Slowly move the treat towards your dog and downwards at a 45° angle - as if you are pushing the treat in between their front legs towards the chest and floor. Try to get his nose aiming towards the floor and slightly backwards. Step 3:As soon as his elbows drop onto the floor, mark it, and reward him before he drops into a down. (Marking it&nbsp;means&nbsp;a “click”, or a word such as “YES”&nbsp;to teach your dog it’s the right response.) Step 4:Build up the move by waiting a few more seconds before you mark it, withholding the treat. Once your dog can do this, then you can start to add your cue word.&nbsp; Step 5:Now try to do this with you kneeling and then standing. Once your dog can do it just using the cue word, then you can try bowing to each other! Step 6:Take a video of your dog showing off their bow and tag @differentdog and #trickoftheweek, we'd love to see their new moves. How to teach your dog the ‘Paws-Up’ command

Getting your dog to put their front paws up on an object is a handy and fun trick to teach – whether it’s so grandma can give them a fuss; to help with grooming or simply for a cute photo opportunity. Paws-Up is also a great way to build up your dog’s confidence and a trick anyone in the family can teach. We caught up with Diane, our in-house behaviourist and owner of Superhounds to find out the best way to teach it to your dog.&nbsp;

Your first job is to pick out the object you want them to put their paws on, just make sure it’s low enough that they don’t have to lift their paws above their shoulders. A small step, low log, or an upside down washing up bowl on a non-slip mat would all work well. The object needs to be secure, so they don’t move or knock it and lose their confidence or hurt themselves. You can always pop the object between your feet for an extra bit of security. Step 1:&nbsp;Find a tasty treat, like these ones on the&nbsp;<a href="https://shop.differentdog.com/treats.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Different Dog shop</a>&nbsp;that will keep your dog’s attention as you’ll be using it to encourage them onto the object.&nbsp; You may need to build their confidence with the object first if they are uneasy about placing their paws on it, just give it time and lots of 'pawsitive' encouragement, it will come!&nbsp; Step 2:Once your dog has both feet on the object, make sure to mark and reward straight away so they know they have got the move right. Step 3:When your dog is confident putting their paws on the object you can then add in your cue word ‘Paws-Up’. They’ll then start associating the words with the move. Step 4:Before you know it, you’ll be able to remove the treat lure. You can still pretend to have a treat in your hand if this helps, then make sure to mark and reward when your dog has both feet on the object. Step 5:And that’s it – well done to you and your dog on mastering the Paws-Up command. How to keep your dog safe during fireworks

This week our vet Alison talks us through how we can help our dogs during firework season and keep them happy and safe. Many dogs show a fear response to loud noises, such as fireworks. This may be a normal response to an abnormally loud noise or it could be that a noise phobia is developing.Signs of stress and anxiety include refusing to eat, trembling, panting and barking. Some will cling to the owner but more often than not, dogs will try to run away or hide. Some will exhibit destructive behaviour, perhaps chewing at furniture and some may soil the house.&nbsp;These fear responses may be temporary and reduce as the dog gets used to the sound. However, some dogs will become sensitised to the sound, so that responses increase with repeated exposures and a sound phobia develops. <h3>Sound desensitisation</h3> Sound desensitisation is the gradual exposure to the sound at a level below where the dog reacts; the volume is slowly increased over weeks as the dog continues to not react. Dogs generally respond very well to sound desensitisation therapy but it takes time and you must plan the desensitisation program well in advance of any expected fireworks.Be sure to choose times when your dog is calm and settled to implement the therapy. The Dogs Trust has a very useful desensitisation program on their website to download, called ‘Sounds Scary’. In an independent study over 90% of dogs showed desensitisation in 8 weeks, although some did take longer to respond With November 5th fast approaching, time for desensitisation is limited and you may well now need to concentrate on keeping your dog safe this firework night and doing the best you can to help them through. <h3>Keep your dog safe</h3> On evenings that fireworks are expected, walk your dog early to avoid being out and more exposed to the fireworks after dark. All dogs should be microchipped and make sure your dog’s identity tag is present and correct, in case of an escape. Once home, keep doors, windows and curtains closed and play music as a distraction from the noise outside. <h3>Create a calm and cosy refuge</h3> Make sure your dog has a cosy and safe place to escape to in the home- often a familiar, quiet and dimly lit room will be more comforting. In the weeks leading up to fireworks make sure they enjoy this space by encouraging, but not forcing them, to spend restful time there and giving treats and affection in this space to reinforce a positive association. Make the refuge as cosy as possible with bedding and familiar smells.&nbsp;

<h3>Ask your vet about Pheromones</h3> Pheromones are natural chemicals produced by animals, some of which can reassure and reduce anxiety. Synthetic copies of these pheromones -as diffusers, sprays, collars and tablets have been made and shown to reduce fear and anxiety in dogs. Speak to your vet about the use of pheromones and possibly medications to help your dog through this anxious period, always making sure you use them according to instructions. Preferably install a pheromone diffuser in their den a couple of weeks prior to the expected fireworks. <h3>Don’t add to your dog’s stress!</h3> If your dog becomes anxious and fearful with the onset of the fireworks, try not to respond. Getting cross or trying to persuade them it’s not a problem will not help!Encourage them go to their cosy den, knowing that you are near by and there for support. Remain happy and unaffected by the sounds and only once they start to relax, give them attention and affection. Sound phobias detract from dogs’ quality of life and it is best to seek professional advice to deal with the issue, rather than ignoring the problem or hoping it will get better.

The importance of diversity in a dog's diet

Many dogs are fed the same food day in, day out. Adding diversity to your dog’s diet can have significant benefits. The microbiome is the collection of microorganisms, such as bacteria, that live in or on your dog. The majority of these organisms support your dog’s health by assisting in processes such as the digestion of food or the production of vitamins and nutrients. The microbial population in the gastrointestinal tract will also protect against toxins, carcinogens and allergens, by binding to them to prevent them from damaging the body. It works in a similar way for pathogens, like viruses, fungi and ‘bad’ bacteria. In addition to that, ‘friendly’ bacteria can secrete chemicals to kill ‘bad’ bacteria or compete for their energy source to effectively starve them. Disruption to the canine microbiome has been linked to health issues such as gastrointestinal disorders, allergies, autoimmune disorders, obesity and many others. Certain conditions that are assumed to be due to genetic flaws or an ageing body may instead be issues which are emerging due to the lack of support for, or the constant assault upon, our dogs’ microbiomes.So – an important question for dog owners is “how can we best support our dogs’ microbiome?” The nature of the microbiome itself is significantly influenced by the diet of the dog. A healthy microbiome contains a diverse and balanced population of ‘friendly’ bacteria, and a varied diet helps to achieve this. Furthermore, fresh food contributes more to the microbiome than processed food, which has been sterilised to give it a long shelf life.

The idea that dogs should only be fed one recipe or one protein for their entire life has arisen for a number of reasons, but it is not optimal for the microbiome or the overall nutrition of the dog. ﻿It is true that too much diversity can sometimes cause digestive upset, but this is typically seen in dogs that are not used to any diversity in their diets. Quite often these dogs have a level of microbial imbalance within their gastrointestinal tract as a result of constantly eating the same processed food. Once this imbalance is addressed, dietary diversity can successfully be introduced.

Just how has Rambo brought more love into your life? I smile and laugh a lot more since Rambo came into my life. Through having Rambo, I have made some amazing friendships with other dog parents that I probably wouldn't have made without him and have also tried out new things like doggy cinema and doggy bingo! What do you love most about Rambo? Everything of course! The way he cuddles up to me and how he remembers places he has been and will take you back there to revisit them. He knows where the dog shop is near us, but he doesn't know the opening hours or understand that they're closed! And the fact he has a favourite teddy that he must suckle every night before he goes to sleep. How does he show you love? Whenever I've been away from Rambo (even if it’s for a few minutes), I get greeted with the cutest bum wiggle to show how happy he is I'm back.

<h2>Anna, Charlie and Franklin</h2>

How has the lovely Franklin brought more love into your life? Franklin has brought more love into our lives through the pure joy he shows just from seeing us; whether that’s first thing in the morning, or even coming back into the room after leaving for a minute. He has brightened our days just being his goofy self and a total joy. What do you love most about Franklin? I can’t possibly pick one thing I love most about Franklin as he’s the best thing ever. But one thing people tend to say they love about him are the wrinkles on his little feet. They are so adorable! How does he show you love? Franklin has a very funny way of showing love. He climbs up on your shoulder and rests his face on yours, covering your nose and mouth which makes it very hard to breathe. It’s hilarious and we like to say if you get the pleasure of being suffocated by Franklin, then he truly loves you. He is also a very cuddly and kissy pup who just constantly spreads his love to everyone.

How has Mila brought more love into your life? In short, by being our wonderful Mila!&nbsp;Mila came to us as an 8-week-old pup and we fell head over heels with her in a matter of moments. Seeing her settle into our home, trusting, and getting to know us and the world has been so, so special. She has grown to be the sweetest girl with lots of love and affection to give in her own little ways. She never fails to put a smile on our face or the people’s she meets. I sometimes wonder how we got so lucky. She really has the sweetest little heart full of unconditional love. What do you love most about Mila? I love that Mila is an affectionate dog, who loves to cuddle but is also a dog who loves the outdoors. And I love her little ways. How does Mila show you love? Mila shows her love in various ways. The very obvious being tail wagging. She is also big on kisses/licks/cuddles and tends to “spin” when she’s very, very happy about something. Mila will also very often find ways to rest her head on our shoulders, be it in bed or sneaking up on the sofa back behind us. I like to think this is her way of hugging us. Home is where the heart is, and the kids, the dog, and all the mess that gets left behind. Having a dog is wonderful but it can feel like cleaning is a never-ending task, so we reach for anything that can help us, including a variety of different cleaning products. However, there are unseen health hazards to these common household items that are often overlooked. <h3>Hidden Dangers In Our Home</h3> Many cleaning products from shampoo to oven cleaner contain toxic ingredients such as:<ul><li>Ammonia</li><li>Chlorine</li><li>Glycol Ethers</li><li>Formaldehyde</li></ul>These substances release harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air causing indoor pollution. VOCs are implicated in almost 30,000 premature human deaths each year in the UK (2018 <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/shampoo-as-bad-a-health-risk-as-car-fumes-hxzbqlbjf" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">study in</a> the journal Science) and can put pets at risk for cancer, liver and kidney damage. <h3>Pets are vulnerable</h3> Pets are more vulnerable than people to exposure to toxins around the home due to their height and their toys and bedding being close to ground level where vapours may linger. Animals also have faster metabolisms and smaller lungs than we do, so their bodies must work harder to try and eliminate toxins and they are breathing them in more rapidly. A dog’s natural curiosity makes them at greater risk. Any bottles left out, however dangerous, could be a lethal toy to them. <h3>Pup safe – keep it natural</h3> We believe in keeping things as natural as possible, from the food we cook to the cleaning products we use. So, we have done some research and sniffed out our top 5 household products that are safe for our pets and still leave your home looking and smelling delightful!&nbsp; <h2>Homemade Cleaning Products</h2> The best way to ensure your pet isn’t coming into contact with any harmful chemicals is making your own cleaning products. This is also much cheaper as you will more than likely already have all the ingredients in your kitchen cupboard! <h3>All Purpose Cleaner and Odour Buster</h3> Mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle to create a fantastic cleaner for your home, from the kitchen sink to the bathroom floor. If you need to remove any odours, leave the mixture on the desired area for 5-10 minutes and then wipe with a clean, dry cloth. <h3>Stain remover</h3> To get rid of any puppy accidents or muddy paw prints, mix one cup of distilled white vinegar, with one cup of water and 2 teaspoons of bi-carb. Shake up the ingredients, and then spray on the stain. Is grain free dog food good or bad for your dog?

<h2>What is grain free dog food?</h2> Over the last 10 or so years we’ve seen many different types of dog food popping up on the shelves such as raw dog food, <a href="https://www.differentdog.com/dog-food" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">fresh dog food</a> and grain free dog food. Grain free foods are often marketed as a more natural option for your dog. But what exactly does grain free mean and is going grain free the best food for your pooch? Grain free foods do not contain any grains such as rice, corn, wheat, or oats which are common ingredients used in wet foods and dry dog food or dry kibble. Many people have steered away from feeding grain to their dogs due to the high starch levels and their links to allergies. They are also viewed as un-natural ingredients by many who try and feed a more ancestral diet – one that wolves would have eaten, the ancestors of our dogs today. You’ll now find grain free options in all feeding types, from dry dog food to raw dog food to fresh dog food. <h3>Is grain free dog food good for my dog?</h3> More natural dog foods such as raw or freshly cooked can be brilliant grain free foods as these types of foods will not be reliant on a starchy carb during manufacturing. Fresh and raw dog foods have been created to mimic a more natural way of feeding, with a balance of low carbs, proteins, and healthy fats. Our four-legged friends are descendants of wolves and even though they look quite different these days, their digestive systems are still largely similar.&nbsp;Here at Different Dog, we never use grains or other cheap fillers in our meals;<a href="https://www.differentdog.com/recipes" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> learn more about our recipes here</a>.

<h3>Studies have shown that feeding your dog fresh foods with high quality meat and a balance of veg, fruits and seeds can increase their lifespan.</h3> <h3>Is grain free dog food bad for my dog?</h3> Unfortunately, not all grain free food is a healthy option for your dog. Keep an eye out for replacement grains such as lentils, peas, white potato, or quinoa. A diet high in these ingredients can still cause excess starch within the body and have even been linked to a heart condition called Dilated Cardiomyopathy. Our dogs do not have a need for starch in their diet, whether that’s from grains or carbohydrates – the hormones they have in their body help to demonstrate this. Insulin for example, is a hormone that reduces blood sugar by moving it into cells, and it’s the only hormone dogs have that reduces sugar in the blood. On the contrary, dogs have eight hormones for elevating blood sugar meaning they don’t need starch to do this. Top Tip: want to find out how much starch is in the dog food you are currently feeding? Check the back of the pack and find the Nutritional Analysis which has the guaranteed minimum amounts of nutrients in the food. Find the percentages of protein, fat, moisture, and ash and then add them together. (If ash isn’t listed then use 7% for kibble and 2% for wet food). Subtract that total from 100 and you’ll find the amount of carbohydrates in the food. 100 - (Protein + Fat + Moisture + Ash) = % of Carbohydrates <h3>Grain Free Dog Food vs Grain Dog Food</h3> Grain free dog food can be very similar to grain dog food. Many manufacturers trade out starchy grain for a non-grain starchy carbohydrate, which still isn’t the best for our canine friends. Fresh grain free foods such as raw or freshly cooked dog food that are low in carbohydrates with a balance of natural, whole foods, have been shown through many studies to be the best diet for our dogs. <h3>Healthy grain free dog food recipes</h3> Looking to try out grain free and low carbohydrate dog food? Our first Walk & Talk dog walk

What do you get when you combine 20 dogs, their owners, coffee, and plenty of our Game On treats? Our first Different Dog Walk &amp; Talk dog walk!

This October, we had the pleasure of hosting our first community dog walk. We gathered together some of our amazing Pup Partners and local customers and headed off on a gentle morning stroll around the Quarry in Shrewsbury, coffees in hand from local barista Patch, keeping us warm &amp; caffeinated!

With it being England, we couldn't fully trust the weather forecast, and the rain just wouldn't take the hint to stay away. We were promised a dry morning – sorry everyone! But, even with a bit of drizzle, everyone was in high spirits, and we were thrilled that all the four-legged attendees behaved so well. Phoebe did enjoy a nice roll around in the mud, which Meg “definitely” appreciated when she attempted to steal all of our treats from her cream tote bag.

“Do I smell treats?”

Our co-founder Alex and the famous Crumble joined us and Crumble was particularly excited to meet everyone. She was a bit impatient at first and wanted to crack on with the walk, but her attention shifted when she noticed the treats being handed out - what a coincidence!&nbsp;The group went on a lovely walk around the Quarry, which gave the pups plenty of room to be comfortable and have a run around when they needed to. Although a few of them were a bit nervous at the beginning, they soon settled into the relaxed atmosphere and made some new furry friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;Our team loved meeting everyone. Whether our walkers were long-term customers or this was their first time hearing all about Different Dog, it was wonderful to get to know everyone and, of course, all of their wonderful dogs!&nbsp;We’re so grateful that so many of you wanted to spend your Saturday morning with us. This week our Vet and Nutritionist answer your questions about feeding your puppy. <h3>How do I change my new puppy’s diet to something I’d prefer them to have?</h3> Make sure you have a small amount of the food your puppy has been fed by the breeder, even if it’s not your choice. Leaving their mother and siblings and the environment they’ve known, is stressful for any puppy – so it’s best not to make any dietary changes at all in the first few days. Contrary to popular belief, calcium and phosphorous supplements are not necessary for growing pups and can be harmful – especially in large and giant breeds where they can contribute to skeletal disorders. <h3>How much do I need to feed my puppy?</h3> As mentioned above, it’s important not to overfeed the growing pup. Always feed to body condition – maintaining a lean and well muscled body condition throughout the growth period will support a moderate rate of development and prevent your puppy getting overweight.&nbsp;Based on the data you provide us with we will estimate how many calories your puppy needs. This amount will increase gradually whilst they’re in their rapid growth period, until they’re 4 to five months. Large breeds grow relatively more slowly and have a longer growth period, so reach adult size at an older age in months than small breeds.

If this has not been done at weaning, it is still important to introduce variety but, as discussed above, be aware that moving to a new home, new surroundings, new instructions, loss of litter mates, vaccinations etc. can be stressful and this is not the time to add more change through their diet! Let the puppy settle and establish themselves before steadily trying a variety of foods. These could be fresh fruit and vegetables (dog appropriate) or new proteins. <h3>The Importance of Appropriate Exercise</h3> Exercise is important for puppies’ mental and physical wellbeing but one must avoid over exercising. Too much exercise at a young age has been associated with joint problems. A rule of thumb is to allow them 5 mins per month of age up to twice daily (so a 5 month old puppy= up to 25 minutes). When we came home from our first evening of agility, she was tired in a way she just wasn’t from our daily walks.&nbsp; <h2>What is dog agility?</h2> Agility is an activity in which dog and handler complete a number of obstacles in a sequence, with the aim of doing it cleanly in as fast a time as possible. Don’t worry, it’s only the dog doing the obstacles! The handler’s job is to act like a sat nav, directing the dog on where to go next, since each sequence has a unique arrangement. The dog, meanwhile, is tasked with jumping over jumps, racing through tunnels, bending his way through the weaves and speeding over the off-the-ground equipment such as the A-frame and see-saw.&nbsp; During agility training, your dog will get to learn all sorts of new skills – engaging both his brain and his body. Plus, he’ll be hanging out with other dogs and you’ll get a chance to meet like-minded dog-lovers.&nbsp; There’s loads to learn in agility. For example, did you know that when the dog goes through the weave poles he always has to start with the first pole on his left side? Or that a competition sequence can be anywhere from 16 to 20 obstacles long?&nbsp; There are exciting handling manoeuvres to learn too, such as a front or blind cross, which are both ways of getting your dog from one side of you to the other, or a ketschker, which is a move you can do on a jump to encourage your dog to turn tightly around the jump wing.&nbsp;&nbsp; Gradually, my Labrador and I got more and more hooked on agility.&nbsp;She would get excited on the drive there and when she figured out where we were headed I’d hear her letting out tiny little whines in the car! We started to make friends at the club and eventually, I was talked into doing a competition.&nbsp;&nbsp; Competitions sound serious, but are actually a whole lot of fun. At a competition, you get set a sequence by the judge. The first time you see that sequence will be when you “walk the course”. You do this with the other handlers, without your dogs and are figuring out how to navigate your dog around the course as efficiently as possible. There is often a bit of strategy involved, for example there might be a few different route variations to choose from.&nbsp;

Once it’s your turn, you head to the start line and after getting the all-clear to begin, it’s game-on! Most sequences take around 25 to 40 seconds to complete, so it all happens really quickly. You’re aiming for a clear round, but if your dog knocks a pole or misses a weave entry you’ll pick up faults. If your dog goes the wrong way – such as heading into the wrong end of the tunnel – it’s called an elimination, and when this happens the judge will usually make an X sign with their hands.&nbsp; Crufts is an ideal opportunity to watch some fabulous agility as many of the best dog and handler partnerships in the country will be there. If you aren’t going in person, it’s worth keeping an eye out for it on TV, as Crufts highlights are shown on Channel 4. The rest is screened live on the Kennel Club’s Crufts channel on YouTube. This year, I’m really excited to be competing again at Crufts with my Jack Russell cross Border Collie Shelley. We are taking part in the British Open and Championship events on Thursday. It’s a massive thrill competing at Crufts, the atmosphere is always buzzing! Shelley (posh name: “Agility Champion Goldheart Trail of Flames”) absolutely loves running on the green carpet. A few years ago, we won the British Open. It was a really happy time as I had given birth to my first child just a few weeks beforehand. You’ll see all sorts of dogs doing agility at Crufts, and that’s because it’s a great activity for so many pets. Dogs of all sizes can take part, from tiny Papillons through to large Malinois. It doesn’t matter whether your dog is pedigree or not, as there’s no distinction in agility. So long as your dog is reasonably fit and healthy, free from back conditions and a reasonable weight, the chances are he’ll enjoy agility.

<h2>Will my dog be able to learn agility?</h2> Before starting agility, it’s useful to make sure your dog has a few life skills. He needs to know to come back to you when you call him off lead. I constantly “add value” to this behaviour so I pair something good happening with my dog coming to me when I call. This could be giving her a treat or playing a game with her after I call.&nbsp; It's also useful pre-agility to teach your dog how to wait – in other words, how to stay still until you tell him to move. A great time to teach this is at Different Dog mealtimes, because he’ll be keen to get to his food! The trick is to get your dog used to staying still while you put his food down, by raising it up if he goes straight towards it. When he stops trying to move forward, put his food down and then use a word such as “go” to tell him the wait game is over.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Agility trainers are used to teaching all sorts of different partnerships. I train agility full time around the country and my classes have included a diverse range of people, from children to handlers in their eighties. <h2>How is Wet Dog Food Made?</h2>Wet dog food is made by selecting ingredients such as meats and vegetables which are then often ground together and combined with carbohydrates and grains to bulk out the recipe. A gravy/jelly substance is then added for moisture, which often includes vitamins &amp; minerals for added flavour.After this is finished, the mixture is then cooked at a high temperature, sterilised and decanted into cans to be sealed and distributed.

How to tell if your dog is overweight and how to fix it

The Royal Veterinary College has&nbsp;released a new study on dog obesity which has revealed the scale of the overweight epidemic in UK dogs, with 1 in 14 dogs recorded by their vets as being overweight each year.&nbsp;Concerningly, these findings may just be the start when it comes to canine obesity, because not every overweight dog will receive veterinary care.&nbsp;Other studies have&nbsp;estimated that nearly 50% of dogs in the UK are classed as overweight or obese! The&nbsp;RVC&nbsp;study&nbsp;of 22,333 dogs&nbsp;also found that certain breeds were especially prone to weight gain.&nbsp;&nbsp; These included:&nbsp;-Pugs&nbsp;-Beagles&nbsp;-Golden Retrievers&nbsp;&nbsp;-English Springer Spaniels&nbsp;-Border Terriers&nbsp; <h2>How can you tell if your dog is&nbsp;overweight?&nbsp;</h2>&nbsp;Here&nbsp;are a&nbsp;few simple checks you can do to see if your dog is losing the battle of the bulge. However, if&nbsp;you’re in&nbsp;doubt please consult with your vet.&nbsp; <ul><li>You should be able to see and feel the outline of your dog's ribs without excess fat covering.&nbsp;</li><li>You should be able to see and feel your dog's waist and it should be clearly visible when viewed from above.&nbsp;</li><li>Your dog's belly should be tucked up when viewed from the side.&nbsp;</li></ul>&nbsp;<h3>What&nbsp;is causing weight gain in my dog?&nbsp;</h3>&nbsp;Neutering&nbsp; Changes in sex hormones following neutering are thought to result in behaviour changes, these can include increased appetite and decreased physical activity&nbsp;which can lead to weight gain. What foods are toxic to dogs?

Our Vet Alison talks us through some of the human foods that are toxic to dogs in the blog this week. Tempting as it is to treat your dog to a little of what you’re eating, some human foods are not tolerated by dogs and some can be toxic with devastating consequences. As well as being offered harmful foodstuffs by owners unaware of the danger, dogs may accidentally gain access to them given their inquisitive nature and the widespread distribution of the foodstuffs in our homes.&nbsp; Here we look at a list of foods, that even when ingested in small amounts, can be poisonous to our four legged friends.<h2> </h2><h2>The main foods that are toxic to dogs</h2> CHOCOLATE Chocolate contains the stimulants theobromine and caffeine and it’s these component of chocolate that can be toxic to dogs. The amount of theobromine varies depending on the type of chocolate - it is much more concentrated in unsweetened cooking chocolate, cocoa powder and dark chocolate compared to milk chocolate with white chocolate being a much less significant source.&nbsp; Toxic effects of theobromine in dogs occur at approximately 20mg/Kg with severe signs at 40-50mg/ Kg and seizures at 60mg/Kg. Therefore, treatment is suggested when dogs have eaten what might seem like small amounts of chocolate, especially when the ingestion is of unsweetened baking chocolate or coca powder.&nbsp; &nbsp;Online ‘Chocolate Toxicity Calculators for Dogs ‘ can give a useful indication of toxicity but don’t rely on these -always contact your vet as soon as possible after the ingestion for advice. &nbsp;Signs of theobromine poisoning tend to develop 4-24 hours after ingestion. Theobromine mostly affects the gut, heart, central nervous system and kidneys. Therefore, symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhoea, increased thirst, restlessness, hyperactivity, irregular heartbeat, muscle tremors and seizures. CAFFEINE Dogs are more sensitive to the effects of caffeine than humans. A small amount will not be harmful but a large ingestion of this stimulant will result in similar symptoms to those displayed with chocolate poisoning such as restlessness, vomiting, increased thirst and increased heart rate.&nbsp; Caffeine absorption is rapid in dogs so that initial clinical signs tend to be observed within 2-4 hours of ingestion.&nbsp; MACADAMIA NUTS&nbsp; Dogs can suffer with tremors and weakness, vomiting, depressed demeanour and fever after ingestion of macadamia nuts.&nbsp; Signs of macadamia nut poisoning develop within 12 hours of ingestion and symptoms tend to last for 12-48 hours. XYLITOL This is an artificial sweetener that is found in many human foods including baked goods, sugar-free sweets or gum and some varieties of peanut butter. In dogs it causes a surge in insulin release that can lead to potentially fatal low blood sugar levels. Even small quantities of Xylitol (0.03g/Kg) have been reported to cause low blood sugar in dogs. Often signs of low blood sugar develop rapidly, within 30 minutes, although they may be delayed for 12-18 hours if the xylitol absorption is slowed -this may be the case in some gum products.&nbsp; Symptoms can include lethargy, vomiting, loss of coordination and seizures. Some dogs that ingested larger doses of Xylitol (0.5g/Kg) developed severe, acute liver disease and blood clotting disorders - the mechanism of this failure is not understood but sadly it can be fatal. BLUE CHEESE As with all dairy products, dogs find the digestion of cheese difficult, due to a lack of Lactase. In addition, some of the blue cheeses contain a substance called roquefortine C.&nbsp; Dogs are sensitive to roquefortine C ingestion and if eaten in significant amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and possibly a fever, tremors and seizures. MOULDY FOOD Mouldy food contains toxins that can be poisonous to dogs, so always keep an eye on dogs that scavenge on walks or raid the bin. Mycotoxin toxicosis usually presents as tremors and seizures and in severe cases can be fatal if untreated. ALCOHOL&nbsp; Alcoholic beverages and foods containing alcohol can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, disorientation, restlessness, central nervous system depression and difficulties breathing. ONIONS and GARLIC &nbsp;All members of the onion family -including shallots, onions, scallions, leeks, chives and garlic are toxic to dogs. The onions in all forms, whether they’re raw, cooked, dehydrated or powdered are toxic to dogs.&nbsp; Some breeds appear to be more sensitive to poisonings by the onion family, such as the Akita. A compound in onions can cause stomach and gut irritation in dogs and potentially lead to red blood cell damage with subsequent anaemia.&nbsp; Common clinical signs include vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and loss of appetite. In addition, some dogs will develop anaemia and have pale gums, dark urine and increased respiratory and heart rates.&nbsp; Symptoms may be observed a day after ingestion or may not be apparent for a few days after ingestion, depending on the dose ingested. Reported toxic doses of garlic and onion in dogs are from 5g per Kg bodyweight. GRAPES and RAISINS &nbsp;The toxic substance in grapes, raisins, sultanas and currants is unknown but can cause kidney failure in sensitive dogs. The fruits may be ingested raw or cooked as ingredients in fruit cakes, mince pies and other baked goods.&nbsp; The toxic dose seems to vary greatly between individuals and therefore, there is no safe dose for dogs for the ingestion of grapes and the dried products.&nbsp; Vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and lethargy can occur within 12-24 hours of ingestion, dogs may become dehydrated and signs of kidney failure can follow soon after. The kidney failure can be fatal. <h2>What to do if your dog ingests a toxic food:</h2> In line with any potential poisoning, once you realise that your dog has eaten something they shouldn’t, contact your vet immediately.&nbsp; The time taken to administer appropriate veterinary treatment can play a significant role in determining the outcome with poisonings. If the ingestion is within 90-120 minutes, your vet may induce vomiting to reduce the amount of toxic ingredient in their system.&nbsp; Even if this window has been missed, it is worth contacting your vet with as much detail as you can provide, in order to get prompt treatment underway to decontaminate your dog and treat already symptomatic patients appropriately.

How much should you feed a dog and how often?

Feeding your dog: How much, how often and when?It’s hard to not give in to those adorable puppy-dog eyes when it comes to feeding your dog. If most dogs were given the chance, they would eat and eat and eat! However, it’s important to put in place a feeding schedule -&nbsp;one that creates structure and routine in their day and keeps them healthy. You may be wondering what exactly this schedule looks like? Well, there’s no single answer and it somewhat depends on their breed, age and lifestyle amongst other factors, however this handy guide should give some guidance to get you started. How much to feed a dog?Feeding amounts differ greatly across brands and food types. You may have to feed more wet food compared to dry kibble due to its moisture content. Some foods may also be bulked out with hard-to-digest filler ingredients such as grains, so you may need to feed more in order for your dog to get the right amount of nourishment from them. Look out for the suggested feeding guide on the back of your food packet, which will give you the best direction on how much your dog needs to eat. If your dog is older and overweight, go for the lesser amount suggested, if your dog is skinny and active, go for the higher recommended number of grams. Remember if you are feeding a combination of foods, for instance dry kibble with some freshly cooked food on top, then you will need to work out 75% of their daily requirement of calories for their dry food and 25% of their daily calorie requirement of their freshly cooked food, so not to overfeed. What about treats?Treats are also something you need to consider when working out how much to feed your dog. These extra calories can very easily cause them to pile on the pounds without you even realising. Treats should not make up any more than 10% of their daily calorie requirements.&nbsp;If you use treats regularly for training, you can use smaller pieces of high value treats such as dried and freshly cooked meat or healthy low-calorie options like vegetables, (carrots are a good option). Always make sure to reduce their food in order to offset the extra calories from these treats.&nbsp;Small Dogs: lighter than 10kgWhen feeding a small breed dog, they will have a lower calorie requirement than a bigger dog so will not need as many grams per day. When feeding Different Dog, you can expect to feed between 100g and 350g a day for an adult dog doing an average amount of exercise.&nbsp;Medium Dogs: weigh between 10-25kgAn adult, medium dog will need between 350g and 700g of Different Dog food a day. This is based on an average amount of exercise a day.&nbsp;Large Dogs: heavier than 25kgLarge breed dogs require the most calories so will need more grams of food a day. You can expect to feed between 700g to 1kg+ of Different Dog daily.&nbsp; Some large dog breed owners feeding Different Dog opt to use our food as a topper on their original food, as introducing just 10% of fresh food into a dog's diet has shown major health benefits. Scheduling 3 feeds instead can help to keep things more stable for our smaller furry friends.&nbsp;Extra-large breeds can also benefit from increasing the number of times they are fed a day. Larger breeds tend to suffer from bloat after eating, so feeding smaller portions of food more regularly can help to prevent this, as well as ensuring they get all the calories they need for the day.&nbsp;Dogs with medical issues or dietary needs may require a specialised feeding schedule, but these will be put in place by your vet.&nbsp;How many times a day should I feed my puppy?Puppies will need different treatment to their adult counterparts due to the need for more calories as they’re growing. However, they will often struggle to eat all their food in two meals due to lack of space in their little tummies so young puppies will need to be fed small and regular meals. Most people feed their puppy around four times a day and drop down to three a day when they are around four months old. Once their growth has started to slow down, you can then drop down to two feeds a day depending on their adult size.&nbsp; How do I know when my dog is hungry?How often do you sit down to eat and suddenly find your dog by your side, begging for a bite of your breakfast? Their pleading eyes and whines may be convincing, but how do you know if your dog is actually hungry or just trying to score a bite?If your dog is getting regular meals, it’s likely they aren’t starving. By monitoring their body condition, you can see if they may need some extra calories. <ul><li>Underweight - your dog’s ribs and pelvic bones are visible and there is noticeable loss of muscle mass.</li><li>Ideal weight - you’ll be able to feel your dog’s ribs and see their waist when viewed from above.</li><li>Overweight -&nbsp;your dog’s ribs are not visible and difficult to feel without pressure. Their waist is not clear to see when viewed from above.</li></ul>&nbsp;When to feed a dog: should I feed my dog before or after a walk?When it comes to food and exercise, the general rule is to separate their meals from their walks by at least 30 minutes, though 1-2 hours is better. Have you ever wondered how we went from feeding our dogs human food to dry biscuits? Keep reading to find out… <h3>Kitchen scraps and raw meat</h3> Early dog diets were a bit of a mix and very much depended on what family they lived with and if they had a job to do. Many societies fed their pups leftover bread and kitchen scraps, with meat and bones. Working dogs were fed lard and grains to keep their energy up, and horse meat was also a popular source of dog food.&nbsp; <h3>Dog biscuits&nbsp;</h3> Dog biscuits came about when James Spratt, a businessman from Ohio, visited London in the 1860’s and saw street dogs flock to the docks where leftover sailors biscuits had been thrown down.Spratt knew these biscuits were simple to make, had a very long shelf life and were easy to store, so he was inspired to make his own. Spratts biscuits were made from a mixture of wheat, vegetables, beetroot and beef blood.This was the first type to be introduced to the market and it was very popular – he named them “Patented meat Fibrine Dog cake”.&nbsp; <h3>Tinned food</h3> The first “tinned” dog food was introduced to the world in 1922. Made from horse meat, the food was called Ken-L Ration and was so popular they started farming horses specifically for tinned dog food. Ken-L Ration was advertised on the radio during popular family shows.&nbsp; <h3>WWII</h3> During the war, metals became scarce and so the production of tinned dog food took a downturn, and meat was rationed. Dog biscuits rose again in popularity.After WWII the pet food industry shifted to using more meat by-products as this was a really economical and very convenient way to feed the canine population. Interestingly, the number one benefit of this commercial pet food was how convenient it was (and not any health benefits to the dog!) <h3>Kibbles</h3> In 1965 the first dry “kibbles” were being produced, made through a process called extrusion.Extrusion is still used today to make kibbles. Ingredients are mixed together and ground into a dough, which is then pushed through the extruder and heated under pressure. Temperatures can reach up to 200 degrees Celsius.These kibbles grew in popularity and companies started making ailment-specific diets. By the 1990’s dog food included diets based on the breed and activity level of the dog. <h3>2020</h3> The way we feed dogs in 2020 is shifting – dog owners are searching for food that is high quality and uses natural (and recognisable) ingredients. How to transition your dog onto new food

<h2>Why should I transition my dog onto new food gradually?</h2>We talk about transitioning onto our recipes a lot, whether it’s in our Welcome Booklet, on our social media platforms, or in our online community, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/devotedtodogs" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Devoted to Dogs</a>. So, what does it mean? And why is a steady and gradual transition to a new diet important for our dogs?&nbsp;We sat down with our in-house nutritionist, Bianca, to put together this handy article as the one-stop shop for everything related to transitioning to a new diet.

<h2>What is the gut microbiome?</h2>Before we get into the food itself, it's important to understand what's going on inside your four-legged friend's body when a new diet is introduced. The gut microbiome is an ecosystem within the gut that influences your dog's ability to digest food, their metabolism, behaviour, and hormonal function, just to name a few. It's a community that can assist in the synthesis of vitamins as well as absorbing them from food, whilst also assisting in regulating the immune system. Quite often, owners are blissfully unaware that it's compromised. Our dog's gut microbiomes are constantly under assault. They're out in the grass with pesticides, walking on floors that we wash with chemicals, and then lick their fur! This is why it's so important to support their microbiome as much as possible to ensure a smooth transition onto a new diet. This can be done by taking your time when transitioning, only introducing a protein or two at the beginning, and transitioning with a probiotic.

<h2>How should I transition my dog onto a new diet?</h2>“There are no real negative effects from going slowly, but there can be some negative effects from going too quickly.” Generally, we recommend a gradual transition over 7-10 days. We say “generally” because whilst every dog is different, most dogs can enjoy a smooth transition to our recipes within 10 days. We suggest starting with 90% of your dog's current food, with 10% Different Dog. Each day, increase the percentage of Different Dog by 10% whilst decreasing their original food by 10% until you're feeding your full quota of Different Dog. If you’re feeding a partial diet, the percentages may differ. Our team can help you plan your dog’s transition, so get in touch if you’d like some guidance. The simplest transition method is the “one spoon in, one spoon out” method. If you follow this method, simply take out one spoon of your dog’s existing food and replace it with a spoon of their new food. Each day, you'll increase the percentage of new food in their bowl.It's important to know that every dog has a different microbiome, so their transition experience will be individual too, and some dogs need a little extra support.

<h2>How do I know if my dog needs a longer transition?</h2>Bianca's top tip for knowing if your dog needs some extra support? Before you begin the switch to a new diet, take the time to look at your dog and assess how they're doing. How is their coat looking? Are they forming good stools? If your dog's coat is dull and their stools are loose, these can be indicators that there's some internal inflammation going on inside your dog. Even if your dog looks great on the outside, it's important to recognise signs that they might need a little extra support internally. So, always keep an eye on your dog when introducing a new diet.

<h2>Does it take longer for an older dog to transition onto a new diet?</h2>Oftentimes, we see puppies transition onto a new diet faster than older dogs because their microbiomes are new and constantly adapting. This is why it's very important to give puppies as much exposure to diversity from a young age. If your dog is older, you may find that they need some extra support when transitioning, especially if they haven't had much diversity in their microbiome. A lack of diversity in the microbiome can build a more unstable environment, which can make it more difficult for your golden oldie to digest certain proteins.

<h2>How many different proteins should my dog have in their diet? </h2>Whilst it's really important to introduce variety into your dog's diet, it's also important to do it correctly. This means not overwhelming your dog's microbiome with too many new proteins all at once. Doing so can lead to certain, ahem, accidents on your carpet which we'd all rather avoid. Bianca recommends feeding one type of protein for a couple of weeks and then steadily introducing the next protein, especially if your dog is prone to a sensitive stomach. By doing so gradually, you can keep an eye on any reactions your dog is having to each protein.

<h2>What protein is best if my dog is allergic to poultry?</h2>If you know your dog has an intolerance to a common protein, like chicken, we suggest trying one of our recipes with a novel protein, such as our Venison &amp; Thyme or Pork Ragu recipes.

<h2>My dog is going off one of the proteins already. What can I do?</h2>Sometimes, we see dogs go off certain proteins very quickly, and it can lead owners to think they simply don't like the food. What may be happening is some gut inflammation within your dog. When your dog has gut inflammation, they'll want to switch up their proteins as they're craving certain nutrients that their gut is unable to absorb. So, if your dog goes off yet another protein, don't panic. Get in touch with the team so we can support you.

<h2>What should I expect to see when I transition my dog onto a new diet?</h2>When you transition your dog onto a new diet, your dog may need to go through the detox process. This can depend on the diet your dog was on previously and the general health of your dog, so like many things, it's individual to your dog. Dogs detox through their orifices, so you may see gunky eyes and some mucus on their stools. Sometimes, owners will see these symptoms and assume their new diet just isn't right for them, but it's actually your dog's system clearing itself out from potential toxins, pesticides, and preservatives that have made their way into their body previously. The detox process can take anywhere between one and three months, again depending on the state that your dog has come from. If you're coming from kibble, there will be a level of systemic inflammation within your dog's body, so don't be alarmed if you see these symptoms. However, you're not necessarily off the hook if you're moving from one fresh food to another, as some fresh food brands contain high levels of legumes which can cause some inflammation in your dog.&nbsp;
