Many dogs find prescription renal diets unpalatable and low in moisture which can tax the kidneys further. The best way to feed will vary from dog to dog, but a fresh food diet will always be superior support to renal function if done correctly. Here is our top recipe for kidney support.

Low in purine and phosphorous, this recipe is designed to support kidney and liver health. Hand-cooked with lean turkey and white fish and infused with dandelion and nettler to help promote urine elimination and aid in the prevention of stone formation. This recipe has the lowest level of phosphorus inclusion in our range at <0.2% ‘as fed’ (<0.7% of dry matter).
Symptoms of Kidney Failure in Dogs
Some of the early signs of Kidney disease include an increase in drinking and urination, a dry flakey coat, and bad breath. These symptoms can then progress to anorexia, nausea and vomiting, extreme weight loss, lethargy, and sunken eyes.
Dietary restriction, specifically with protein sources is commonly advised, however, this should only be introduced in the later stages of renal insufficiency, and even at this stage it should only be restricted by 15-20% of each meal to ensure they get everything they need. The great thing about feeding fresh is the high quality, human-grade bioavailability of the protein is hugely supportive for renal function.
Treating kidney disease in dogs - Django's story
We originally purchased Different Dog because they were the only company I could find with a low phosphorus diet for my dog, who suffered from kidney issues. It turns out that he loves the food even more than his old raw diet, and even spends a long time ensuring he has eaten every bit! The other dog (both terriers) has tasted some and also appears to prefer it to her raw diet. We've had a great after-sales service, too.

Helped reversed kidney disease
Helped reversed kidney disease - we chose to switch to this dog food because they offer a kidney friendly option for our dog that was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease. She has been on the food now - together with a range of supplements recommended by a vet in the US - for around 8 months now - and her kidney disease has improved! She is now stage 3 and the vet can't believe that her numbers have improved when he suggested that she may only have weeks left to live. We are so grateful for this tailored/ fresh food and how it has helped our dog. All 3 of our dogs love it.

Excellent! 9.5/10
Purchased as DD were the only company I could find with a low phosphorus diet for a dog with kidney issues. He loves the food even more than his old raw diet and spends a long time making sure he has eaten every bit. The other dog (both terriers) has tasted some and appears to prefer it to her raw diet! I will need to increase the amount I’m buying. I do supplement with a little raw as I can’t afford to feed both dogs on DD unfortunately, much as I would like to, seeing how both dogs love it. Great after sales service, too.

The food looks very appetising
After our dog was diagnosed with stage 2 kidney disease we tried numerous dog foods only to find Harley turned his nose up at them all. We then found Different Dog and Harley loves it. The food looks very appetising ulike sone of the raw ones we tried. I just wish we'd made the switch years ago. The staff are very helpful and genuinely have your dog's best interests at heart.
