<h2>Oh, how we missed you, Crufts!</h2>After a couple of years away cooking for more dogs than ever, our team gathered in Birmingham for Crufts last week. We arrived each morning loaded with knowledge, energy drinks, and plenty of our delicious treats!&nbsp; We hope we did meet you there, but if you weren’t able to attend, don’t worry, we’ve rounded up the below for you to enjoy.

<h2>We loved meeting you</h2>Without a doubt, our favourite part of Crufts was getting to speak with so many of you. We were blown away by how many of you came by to share your dogs’ stories with us, or even just to say “hello”. Alex was even brought to tears when one particular owner shared how our food changed her dog’s life, and it was an impactful reminder of why we do what we do.&nbsp; We also met many of our amazing Pup Partners in person for the first time, after years of “aww-ing” at photos of their dogs on Instagram!

<h2>Did you see us on TV?</h2>We were so excited to see our in-house nutritionist, Bianca, featured on Channel 4 with vet Dr Paul Manktelow!With the rest of our team tuning in from home, Bianca put Dr Paul’s cooking skills to the test on our cooking bar, challenging him to cook up our Shepherd’s Pie recipe whilst she discussed the benefits of feeding a fresh diet.&nbsp;Who do you think cooked up the most delicious lunch at our cooking bar? Mark your calendar and make your way to Different Dog’s stand (Stand 15 in Hall 2) at select times on all four days to watch our chefs prepare your dog’s new favourite lunch. We’ll be cooking our beloved Turkey Fricassee recipe, following the same cooking process our chefs use in our (much larger) Shropshire kitchen. There will even be mouth-watering samples for your dog to try! The last time we held a live cooking demo at Crufts, TV personalities Clare Balding and Radzi Chinyanganya came to say hello with the camera, so you may even spot a celebrity while you're there.

Enjoy some coffee and pancakes (or whatever is your sugary favourite) to keep your energy up as you explore the last few halls. There are various food and drinks stalls around, but they can get busy quickly, so plan your stops in advance.

<h2>Meet the winner of the Kennel Club Hero Dog Award</h2>Each year, the Kennel Club honors an unsung canine hero with the Hero Dog Award. There are five nomination categories: "Extraordinary Life of a Working Dog", "Hero Support Dog", "Best Friends", "Child's Champion", and "Rescue Dog Hero". <h2>How can I show my dog that I love them?</h2>They say love is a four-legged word, so since February is the official month of love it's only natural that we take a moment to celebrate the love and devotion we share with our dogs. There are endless ways we show love to our four-legged friends, whether it’s letting them sleep on your side of the bed, going an extra mile during walkies, or even investing in their health by choosing a nutritious diet. In fact, there are so many different ways to show our devotion, we asked our dog-loving team what it means to them. Read below for some of our favourites. Keeley from our Customer Delight team says "Being devoted to my dog means showing them unconditional love, care, and companionship every single day. It’s about understanding their needs, celebrating their joys, and comforting them in their fears. It means putting their well-being first, making time for adventures together, and creating a bond built on trust and loyalty. My dog is not just a pet—he’s family, and my devotion to him is a promise to always be there, through every wag, woof, and cuddle.”

Nia from our Marketing team says "Being devoted to my dog, Bobby, means loving him even when he’s just dug up the garden and left muddy paw prints all over the house - because somehow, I can never truly be mad. <h2>How to spread the love in your local community</h2>There’s nothing better than spreading the love, so we took to the streets of Shrewsbury on our latest community dog walk, Walk &amp; Talk, to do just that. The lucky four-legged attendees walked away with some of our limited-edition Love Your Digestion treats and enjoyed an endless supply of scratches and cuddles from our team. Despite the rainy weather, the humans in the group enjoyed a gentle stroll around the beautiful Quarry park, a Valentine’s card, and a warming coffee on us. Our team wanted to spread the love to the rest of our community by handing out some very special roses and treats to dog walkers passing by, which certainly brightened up their Saturday mornings!

How much exercise does my dog need?

How much should we be exercising our dogs? From puppies to senior dogs and small to large breeds, our in-house vet, Alison, gives us her walking advice.

We did it! Although the weather seems tumultuous, there are certainly signs of Spring in the air, and with this comes longer walks and a desire to make the most of the sunshine. No adventure is complete without our four-legged friends, and regular exercise together can be a great way to bond, but it can often be difficult to know how much exercise is appropriate. &nbsp;We’ve asked our in-house vet, Alison, to offer her advice on exercising your dog. Just like with their mealtimes, the amount of exercise needed will depend on your dog’s age, breed, and underlying health issues, so don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team if you’d like some tailored guidance

<h2>How much exercise does my Puppy need?</h2> We’ll start with the babies, and if you’re lucky enough to have welcomed a puppy into your home we wanted to start by saying congratulations on your new family member; what an exciting time this is! &nbsp;When it comes to exercise, it’s imperative not to over-exercise them, as their bones and joints need time to mature. For owners of breeds that are prone to Hip and Elbow Dysplasia, such as Labrador Retrievers, pay extra attention to exercise in your puppy.&nbsp;So, what is the best exercise for a puppy, we hear you ask? Play!&nbsp;Playing together at home is a great way to provide both mental and physical stimulation for your puppy. Once they’re fully vaccinated, this can be increased to a short walk, which will help build your puppy’s confidence in socialising with other humans and dogs. Alison suggests avoiding high-impact exercise, such as jumping from heights or making sharp turns when they’re still a puppy.

<h2>How much exercise does my senior dog need?&nbsp;</h2> For our golden-oldies dogs, it’s important to keep regular, moderate exercise in their lives, to maintain muscle mass, joint strength, and a slim body condition as their metabolism slows. This is especially true for senior dogs suffering from arthritis. If your dog struggles with their joints, swimming can be an excellent choice of activity, as it is less stressful on the joints.&nbsp;Some older dogs suffer from Canine Cognitive Dysfunction, which can leave them feeling disorientated, and having less awareness of their senses. For these dogs, it’s important to find ways to exercise that limit any potential anxiety, for example, taking them on short, familiar routes when out on a walk.

<h2>How much exercise do small and toy breed need? </h2> We feed a lot of smaller breeds such as Cockapoos, Cavapoos, Dachshunds and Chihuahuas. Our Toy and small-breed dogs don’t need as much exercise as the larger, sporting breeds, but will still benefit hugely from regular daily exercise. Most breeds will thrive on a couple of shorter walks per day, and if they’re in good health, aim for each walk to be 20-30 minutes.

<h2>How much exercise does my medium to large dog need?</h2> If your dog is a larger breed, or a working dog, such as a Springer Spaniel, Border Collie or Labrador Retriever, you’ll know that they tend to be energetic and need significant amounts of exercise daily. Alison recommends up to an hour and a half of vigorous exercise per day, if your dog is fit and able. If these larger dogs don’t have the opportunity to blow off some steam and head out for exercise, they may show their frustration in the home with behaviours such as chewing, digging or barking. Mental stimulation such as training and other enrichment games can help to tire intelligent breeds such as Border Collies and Labrador Retrievers, so if you don’t already, think about introducing this into their regime.&nbsp;

<h2>How much should I be exercising my dog in hot weather?</h2> Our in-house vet, Alison, recommends avoiding exercising at the hottest times of the day as we head into Spring and Summer, to minimise the risk of your dog developing heatstroke. Look after your pup’s pads by avoiding walking on pavements on hot days, as this can be damaging and always make sure you take fresh water with you to help cool your dog, as they’re unable to regulate their heat through sweating.

<h2>What dog food will fuel my dog for exercise? </h2> Whilst it’s important to know the amount of exercise recommended for your dog, it’s also vital to have the measures in place to help your dog exercise safely, including making sure they’re properly fuelled. If you’re feeding Different Dog’s high-protein, freshly cooked meals, you’re already one step ahead!Avoid feeding directly before going for an intense exercise session, and always consider your dog’s individual needs and allow plenty of rest breaks for the senior dogs and puppies, especially. Transitioning Your Dog to a New Diet

Transitioning your dog to a new diet should always be done gradually. Find out the best way to change dog foods and how to manage fussy eaters. &nbsp;

<h1>Welcome to the pack</h1> Welcome to the Different Dog pack; thank you so much for choosing our freshly cooked meals for your favourite four-legged friend. While our chefs get cooking your dog’s soon-to-be favourite recipes, here’s a few pointers on how best to navigate the transition period.

<h2>Why it’s important to transition your dog to a new diet gradually</h2> It’s important to transition your dog to any new diet gradually to help their microbiome (that’s the good bacteria that lives in their gut) to steadily adapt to ingredients and textures. It can feel tempting to switch your dog to a new food quickly to give them the benefits as soon as possible, but spending a little time and patience doing the transition slowly will benefit your dog in the long run.By adding a small amount of their new food in with their current diet and building up slowly, our dogs are less likely to experience tummy upsets or loose stools.

<h2>How we recommend transitioning your dog to a new diet </h2> For most dogs, the transition is very straightforward. We recommend taking between seven and ten days to fully transition your dog to their new Different Dog recipes.When your delivery arrives, unpack all of your recipes except one into the freezer, then put the remaining pot into the fridge to defrost, which can take 12-24 hours depending on the size of your pot.Once the recipe is fully defrosted start by adding 10% of Different Dog alongside 90% of their current food to their bowl and feed them at their normal time. If there are no issues, build the amount of Different Dog up by approximately 10% and reduce their existing food by 10% every day over the next week to 10 days until they are eating their full quota of Different Dog.Our team are on hand to support you before, during and after your transition period so please do not hesitate to contact us at <a href="mailto:feedme@differentdog.com" rel="noopener noreferrer">feedme@differentdog.com</a> if you need any help at all.

<h2>How should I transition my dog to a new diet if they have a sensitive stomach?</h2> If your dog has ongoing health issues or a sensitive stomach, we recommend starting with just one or two protein sources at a time. Our in-house nutritionist, Bianca, and vet, Alison, can chat through your dog’s medical history and help you find the best recipes.&nbsp;It can take slightly longer to transition dogs who have health conditions, sensitive stomachs or need extra support, as their digestive system might take a little longer than usual to adjust. Alison and Bianca can also help you create a transition plan to ensure both of you are happy and comfortable throughout this period.It can also be very beneficial to add a probiotic, which provides good bacteria to support gut microbiome health, throughout the transition process. <h2>How to introduce my fussy dog to a new diet:</h2> We’ve helped thousands of former fussy pups rediscover their love of mealtimes again, so we asked Diane, our in-house behaviourist for advice on feeding pups who are known to be a little pernickety.“When transitioning to a new food, give your dog time to investigate, smell and taste the new food. It may be a different texture or flavour. Don't worry if they don't eat it straight away; offer it at their next mealtime or warm the food to release inviting smells."Here are a few of our top tips for encouraging fussy pups to enjoy their meals:<ol><li>Warming the food a little will release a whole new world of delicious aromas. Heat only one meal worth in a microwavable bowl for 10 seconds at a time, stirring between each heat, until you are satisfied with the temperature.&nbsp;Make sure you do not put any food back into the fridge once it has been heated.</li><li>Stick to regular mealtimes and avoid feeding them titbits or treats throughout the day.</li><li>Adding <a href="https://www.differentdog.com/treats" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Bone Broth</a> to your dog’s food can tempt fussy pups. Choose from succulent lamb and delicious venison and pour on hot or cold to soften the food and make it more palatable, especially for smaller or older dogs.</li><li>Try feeding your dog in a different bowl or at a different height – some dogs, especially larger dogs, don’t like bending down to the floor to eat their food, so using a bowl stool or popping it on top of the Different Dog Whine &amp; Dine box can help.</li></ol>We understand how hard it is when your dog isn’t much of a “foodie”, but consistency and perseverance are key. <h2>When should I expect to see healthy changes in my dog</h2> It’s important to remember that every dog is different, and the timeline and benefits themselves differ from dog to dog. However, some of our customers report benefits such as better digestion and healthier, less frequent poops as soon as a couple of weeks into our food. Over time you may notice other benefits such as:<ol><li>Better overall health and less need for visits to the vet</li><li>Less smelly gas</li><li>Healthier, itch-free skin</li><li>A shinier coat</li><li>Increased energy levels</li><li>More excitement around mealtimes</li></ol>

<h2>Your transition FAQs answered</h2> My dog is drinking less water since switching to your freshly cooked recipes; is this normal? Some dogs will drink much less water on our recipes, especially if they are switching from a dry food or kibble. Our ingredients are naturally moisture-rich, therefore provide your dog with a lot of the water they need. You may notice that there is some liquid in your pot once your meal has defrosted; this is filled with nutrients which are naturally released during our cooking process and should be served along with your dog’s food. I’m still not sure how much I should be feeding?&nbsp;You can find your daily feeding guide by logging into your account on our website and visiting your dog’s profile, which you can find here: <a href="https://www.differentdog.com/account/dogs/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://www.differentdog.com/account/dogs/</a>It’s important to remember that this is just a guide; you know your dog best and if you feel they are still hungry or eating too much then we can help you change the daily amount. How do you store the food once it’s opened?Our pots are nice and easy to open and close thanks to our handy lid; just place the lid back on to keep any leftovers fresh in the fridge. Can I serve the food cold?Our recipes arrive frozen to lock the freshness in, so should be stored in the freezer, then defrosted as needed. They can be served straight from the fridge or warmed in the microwave as per our instructions above, depending on your dog’s preference. Each tub will stay fresh in the fridge for up to five days once defrosted.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;How do I dispose of your packaging? As a certified B Corp, we take sustainability very seriously, which is why all of our packaging is either recyclable or compostable. Our recipe pots are compostable, and our cardboard sleeves are recyclable. The Whine &amp; Dine box, the outer of our insulating wool liner and the outers of the ice packs are also recyclable, and you can compost the wool from our insulation.&nbsp; Alternatively, you can save your wool liners and ice packs until you have enough to fill a Different Dog box. This will help prevent any matting or uncomfortable knots. As Cavapoos do not shed their coats, professional grooming is often required to ensure they stay tidy and most importantly comfortable. Every dog is different but we recommend booking into the groomers every 4-6 weeks.
