Water is essential for your dog’s body to function properly, supporting their digestion, regulating their temperature, cushioning joints, and helping to flush out toxins. Without enough water, even active, healthy dogs can start to feel lethargic or unwell.
Hydration plays a crucial role in every part of your dog’s health. It’s especially important in warmer weather, but it’s something owners should be mindful of every day.
What’s the Difference Between Kibble and Fresh Dog Food?
A typical dry food (kibble) contains less than 11% moisture. That means your dog has to drink a significant amount of water to make up for what’s missing from their bowl.
Fresh dog food, on the other hand, naturally contains much more moisture. Many of Different Dog’s recipes have over 70% moisture, thanks to the fresh, gently cooked ingredients we use. Formulated by nutritionist Bianca (PGDip Nutrition & Canine Nutrition, MSFTR, CPN), the moisture in our recipes comes from the ingredients themselves, especially the protein source. We never add water to our recipes as it’s not needed - we let nature do the work!
This means your dog gets a hydrating boost from every meal, helping to maintain healthy fluid levels without relying solely on the water bowl.
Some ingredients are particularly helpful for hydration and overall health:
Blueberries and blackberries – Used in our Hearty Beef and Berries and Pork Ragu recipes, these fruits are naturally hydrating and rich in antioxidants.
Salmon oil – A great source of both healthy fats and natural moisture, salmon oil also provides Omega 3 and 6 to support the skin, coat, and joints.
As a guide, dogs typically need around 50 to 70ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day. This can vary based on age, activity level, weather, and what your dog eats. Dogs fed fresh food may naturally drink a little less, as they are already getting moisture through their meals.
Being able to spot the early signs of dehydration is key:
Darker yellow urine
Lethargy or low energy
Dry nose or gums
Reduced appetite
Less frequent urination, or unusually small amounts
Changes in drinking habits – drinking less, or in some cases, more
Keep an eye on how much water your dog is drinking and how often they are urinating. If you notice anything unusual, it’s always best to speak with your vet.
Whilst most of us love the warmer weather, it does bring with it an extra challenge in keeping our dogs hydrated. Our behaviourist, Diane (APDT, IMDT, PPG, Cert. TPTD), has shared her top tips for keeping your dog cool and comfortable:
1. Keep Water Accessible
Make sure there’s fresh, clean water in every room your dog uses
If you’re travelling, take a non-spill travel bowl in the cars
Check bowls regularly and clean them daily to avoid bacterial buildup
2. Offer Frozen Hydrating Treats
Freeze Different Dog Bone Broth into cubes for a cooling, nutrient-rich treat
Spoon yoghurt or goats’ milk into ice cube trays for a gentle snack
Fill an enrichment toy, such as a Kong, with your dog’s favourite Different Dog recipe iand freeze for a fun enrichment treat
3. Create a Cool Environment
Provide shade in the garden and avoid hot pavements
Use a cooling vest or bandana on walks, and try to walk at the cooler hours of the day
If your dog is outside in the sun, use pet-safe sunscreen and supervise their outdoor time
4. Tempt Reluctant Drinkers
Serve up a bowl of drool-worthy bone broth to aid in keeping them hydrated. Different Dog’s bone broth comes in three flavours: Chicken, Venison, and Lamb, so there’s something for all tastebuds
Stir in a little goat’s milk powder, like the one in our range, to make water more appealing
Feeding your dog fresh food is one of the easiest and most effective ways to support hydration every day. It’s naturally rich in moisture, made from whole ingredients, and free from fillers or artificial additives.
No matter the season, by feeding Different Dog, your dog benefits from:
Hydrating meals made with real food - no added water or nasties
Increased energy
Healthy digestion and smaller, less-smelly poops
No more itchy skin
Every dog deserves to feel their best. Switching to fresh food not only supports hydration but also helps with digestion, energy, and your dog’s overall well-being.
