<h1>Can I recycle dog food packaging?</h1> We can all be more eco-friendly in our day-to-day lives. Many of us already opt for eco-friendly options, such as using public transport instead of driving, and purchasing loose fruit and veg instead of those wrapped in unnecessary plastic. Did you know you can also be sustainable in your choice of food for your four-legged friend? Whilst not every dog food uses packaging that can be recycled or reused, there are eco-friendly options to discover, such as Different Dog.

<h2>What parts of Different Dog’s packaging can I recycle?</h2> As you know, caring for our planet is important to us. That’s why our food pots are made from reclaimed, rapidly renewable sugarcane pulp – a by-product that would otherwise be burned. Our delivery boxes, pot sleeves, and the outer layer of the wool liners are all recyclable. The ice packs can be recycled too (simply pour the non-toxic solution down the drain first), or you can reuse them at home. <h2>Oh, how we missed you, Crufts!</h2>After a couple of years away cooking for more dogs than ever, our team gathered in Birmingham for Crufts last week. We arrived each morning loaded with knowledge, energy drinks, and plenty of our delicious treats!&nbsp; We hope we did meet you there, but if you weren’t able to attend, don’t worry, we’ve rounded up the below for you to enjoy.

<h2>We loved meeting you</h2>Without a doubt, our favourite part of Crufts was getting to speak with so many of you. We were blown away by how many of you came by to share your dogs’ stories with us, or even just to say “hello”. Alex was even brought to tears when one particular owner shared how our food changed her dog’s life, and it was an impactful reminder of why we do what we do.&nbsp; We also met many of our amazing Pup Partners in person for the first time, after years of “aww-ing” at photos of their dogs on Instagram!

Enjoy some coffee and pancakes (or whatever is your sugary favourite) to keep your energy up as you explore the last few halls. There are various food and drinks stalls around, but they can get busy quickly, so plan your stops in advance.

<h2>Meet the winner of the Kennel Club Hero Dog Award</h2>Each year, the Kennel Club honors an unsung canine hero with the Hero Dog Award. There are five nomination categories: "Extraordinary Life of a Working Dog", "Hero Support Dog", "Best Friends", "Child's Champion", and "Rescue Dog Hero". How to celebrate your dog this Valentine’s month

<h2>How can I show my dog that I love them?</h2>They say love is a four-legged word, so since February is the official month of love it's only natural that we take a moment to celebrate the love and devotion we share with our dogs. There are endless ways we show love to our four-legged friends, whether it’s letting them sleep on your side of the bed, going an extra mile during walkies, or even investing in their health by choosing a nutritious diet. In fact, there are so many different ways to show our devotion, we asked our dog-loving team what it means to them. Read below for some of our favourites. Keeley from our Customer Delight team says "Being devoted to my dog means showing them unconditional love, care, and companionship every single day. It’s about understanding their needs, celebrating their joys, and comforting them in their fears. It means putting their well-being first, making time for adventures together, and creating a bond built on trust and loyalty. My dog is not just a pet—he’s family, and my devotion to him is a promise to always be there, through every wag, woof, and cuddle.”

Nia from our Marketing team says "Being devoted to my dog, Bobby, means loving him even when he’s just dug up the garden and left muddy paw prints all over the house - because somehow, I can never truly be mad. It means that no matter where I go, I’m always looking forward to coming home to his wagging tail and endless excitement. <h2>How to spread the love in your local community</h2>There’s nothing better than spreading the love, so we took to the streets of Shrewsbury on our latest community dog walk, Walk &amp; Talk, to do just that. The lucky four-legged attendees walked away with some of our limited-edition Love Your Digestion treats and enjoyed an endless supply of scratches and cuddles from our team. Despite the rainy weather, the humans in the group enjoyed a gentle stroll around the beautiful Quarry park, a Valentine’s card, and a warming coffee on us. Our team wanted to spread the love to the rest of our community by handing out some very special roses and treats to dog walkers passing by, which certainly brightened up their Saturday mornings!

How to transition your dog onto new food

<h2>Why should I transition my dog onto new food gradually?</h2>We talk about transitioning onto our recipes a lot, whether it’s in our Welcome Booklet, on our social media platforms, or in our online community, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/devotedtodogs" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Devoted to Dogs</a>. So, what does it mean? And why is a steady and gradual transition to a new diet important for our dogs?&nbsp;We sat down with our in-house nutritionist, Bianca, to put together this handy article as the one-stop shop for everything related to transitioning to a new diet.

<h2>What is the gut microbiome?</h2>Before we get into the food itself, it's important to understand what's going on inside your four-legged friend's body when a new diet is introduced. The gut microbiome is an ecosystem within the gut that influences your dog's ability to digest food, their metabolism, behaviour, and hormonal function, just to name a few. It's a community that can assist in the synthesis of vitamins as well as absorbing them from food, whilst also assisting in regulating the immune system. Quite often, owners are blissfully unaware that it's compromised. Our dog's gut microbiomes are constantly under assault. They're out in the grass with pesticides, walking on floors that we wash with chemicals, and then lick their fur! This is why it's so important to support their microbiome as much as possible to ensure a smooth transition onto a new diet. This can be done by taking your time when transitioning, only introducing a protein or two at the beginning, and transitioning with a probiotic.

<h2>How should I transition my dog onto a new diet?</h2>“There are no real negative effects from going slowly, but there can be some negative effects from going too quickly.” Generally, we recommend a gradual transition over 7-10 days. We say “generally” because whilst every dog is different, most dogs can enjoy a smooth transition to our recipes within 10 days. We suggest starting with 90% of your dog's current food, with 10% Different Dog. Each day, increase the percentage of Different Dog by 10% whilst decreasing their original food by 10% until you're feeding your full quota of Different Dog. If you’re feeding a partial diet, the percentages may differ. Our team can help you plan your dog’s transition, so get in touch if you’d like some guidance. The simplest transition method is the “one spoon in, one spoon out” method. If you follow this method, simply take out one spoon of your dog’s existing food and replace it with a spoon of their new food. Each day, you'll increase the percentage of new food in their bowl.It's important to know that every dog has a different microbiome, so their transition experience will be individual too, and some dogs need a little extra support.

<h2>How do I know if my dog needs a longer transition?</h2>Bianca's top tip for knowing if your dog needs some extra support? Before you begin the switch to a new diet, take the time to look at your dog and assess how they're doing. How is their coat looking? Are they forming good stools? If your dog's coat is dull and their stools are loose, these can be indicators that there's some internal inflammation going on inside your dog. Even if your dog looks great on the outside, it's important to recognise signs that they might need a little extra support internally. So, always keep an eye on your dog when introducing a new diet.

<h2>Does it take longer for an older dog to transition onto a new diet?</h2>Oftentimes, we see puppies transition onto a new diet faster than older dogs because their microbiomes are new and constantly adapting. This is why it's very important to give puppies as much exposure to diversity from a young age. If your dog is older, you may find that they need some extra support when transitioning, especially if they haven't had much diversity in their microbiome. A lack of diversity in the microbiome can build a more unstable environment, which can make it more difficult for your golden oldie to digest certain proteins.

<h2>How many different proteins should my dog have in their diet? </h2>Whilst it's really important to introduce variety into your dog's diet, it's also important to do it correctly. This means not overwhelming your dog's microbiome with too many new proteins all at once. Doing so can lead to certain, ahem, accidents on your carpet which we'd all rather avoid. Bianca recommends feeding one type of protein for a couple of weeks and then steadily introducing the next protein, especially if your dog is prone to a sensitive stomach. By doing so gradually, you can keep an eye on any reactions your dog is having to each protein.

<h2>What protein is best if my dog is allergic to poultry?</h2>If you know your dog has an intolerance to a common protein, like chicken, we suggest trying one of our recipes with a novel protein, such as our Venison &amp; Thyme or Pork Ragu recipes.

<h2>My dog is going off one of the proteins already. What can I do?</h2>Sometimes, we see dogs go off certain proteins very quickly, and it can lead owners to think they simply don't like the food. What may be happening is some gut inflammation within your dog. When your dog has gut inflammation, they'll want to switch up their proteins as they're craving certain nutrients that their gut is unable to absorb. So, if your dog goes off yet another protein, don't panic. Get in touch with the team so we can support you.

<h2>What should I expect to see when I transition my dog onto a new diet?</h2>When you transition your dog onto a new diet, your dog may need to go through the detox process. This can depend on the diet your dog was on previously and the general health of your dog, so like many things, it's individual to your dog. Dogs detox through their orifices, so you may see gunky eyes and some mucus on their stools. Sometimes, owners will see these symptoms and assume their new diet just isn't right for them, but it's actually your dog's system clearing itself out from potential toxins, pesticides, and preservatives that have made their way into their body previously. The detox process can take anywhere between one and three months, again depending on the state that your dog has come from. If you're coming from kibble, there will be a level of systemic inflammation within your dog's body, so don't be alarmed if you see these symptoms. However, you're not necessarily off the hook if you're moving from one fresh food to another, as some fresh food brands contain high levels of legumes which can cause some inflammation in your dog.&nbsp;

<h2>Can using a topper such as goat’s milk powder help my dog's transition?</h2>Introducing a nutritious topper can be a great way to provide some extra support and nutrients to your dog whilst transitioning, but also encourage fussy pups to try their new food. Bianca recommends goat's milk powder as an easy-to-use and beneficial topper for your dog's dinner. <a href="https://www.differentdog.com/supplements" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Our goat's milk powder</a>, The GOAT, can be sprinkled on top of your dog's favourite recipe for digestive and immune-boosting support.

<h2>Exercise Requirements</h2><ul><li>Daily Walks: Aim for at least 90 minutes of walking every day, split into two walks if possible.</li><li>Playtime: Engage in play sessions that include fetch, tug-of-war, or agility activities to keep them mentally and physically stimulated.</li><li>Swimming: Many Golden Retrievers love water, so swimming is an excellent form of low-impact exercise for them if you have access to a safe body of water.</li></ul>

<h2>Do Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Dogs Shed?</h2>Cavalier King Charles Spaniels do shed, but it's manageable. Their shedding is moderate, so while you might notice some fur on your furniture, it won't be excessive. However, it's important to note that this breed is not hypoallergenic, so those with severe allergies may need to consider another breed. Regular brushing can help control shedding, and using a high-quality shampoo during baths will reduce loose hair. Additionally, providing your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a balanced, fresh, and nutrient-dense diet will help their coat shine and look its best.

Their easy-going nature allows them to get along well with everyone, including children and other pets. However, like all dog breeds, they should still be supervised around children.

<h2>Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Exercise Needs</h2>While Cavalier King Charles Spaniels enjoy cuddling up and relaxing with you, they still require daily exercise to remain fit and healthy. Aim for at least 30 minutes to an hour of exercise each day, either divided into a few walks or a more vigorous play session. They aren't as high-energy as some other breeds, so a balanced mix of activity and rest is important. Remember, it's crucial to fuel your dog's activity with the right amount of delicious and nutritious food each day.

<h2>What are Common Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Health Issues?</h2>Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are generally healthy, but like all breeds, they are prone to certain health issues. Common conditions include: Mitral Valve Disease (MVD): A heart condition that’s common in King Charles Spaniels, and other small breeds, especially as they age. The Mitral Valve (found in the heart) weakens, often first presenting as a heart murmur. Early signs of this condition are coughing and noticeable low energy in your pet. With medication and observing lifestyle changes, the condition can be managed.&nbsp; Syringomyelia: This is a neurological condition that affects the brain and spine as fluid builds in cavities in a dog’s spinal cord. The first signs include your pet becoming withdrawn and avoiding petting as the sensation of the fluid buildup becomes more painful. The condition can be managed through pain relief.&nbsp; Ear Infections: Due to their floppy ears and long fur, Charlies are susceptible to ear infections if not groomed properly. Symptoms of this problem in your spaniel will be excessive head shaking and rubbing their ear on surfaces or with their paws. You may also notice excess wax or discharge in their ear canal. What do you get when you combine 20 dogs, their owners, coffee, and plenty of our Game On treats? Our first Different Dog Walk &amp; Talk dog walk!

This October, we had the pleasure of hosting our first community dog walk. We gathered together some of our amazing Pup Partners and local customers and headed off on a gentle morning stroll around the Quarry in Shrewsbury, coffees in hand from local barista Patch, keeping us warm &amp; caffeinated!

With it being England, we couldn't fully trust the weather forecast, and the rain just wouldn't take the hint to stay away. We were promised a dry morning – sorry everyone! But, even with a bit of drizzle, everyone was in high spirits, and we were thrilled that all the four-legged attendees behaved so well. Phoebe did enjoy a nice roll around in the mud, which Meg “definitely” appreciated when she attempted to steal all of our treats from her cream tote bag.

Our co-founder Alex and the famous Crumble joined us and Crumble was particularly excited to meet everyone. She was a bit impatient at first and wanted to crack on with the walk, but her attention shifted when she noticed the treats being handed out - what a coincidence!&nbsp;The group went on a lovely walk around the Quarry, which gave the pups plenty of room to be comfortable and have a run around when they needed to. Although a few of them were a bit nervous at the beginning, they soon settled into the relaxed atmosphere and made some new furry friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;Our team loved meeting everyone. Whether our walkers were long-term customers or this was their first time hearing all about Different Dog, it was wonderful to get to know everyone and, of course, all of their wonderful dogs!&nbsp;We’re so grateful that so many of you wanted to spend your Saturday morning with us. How much should we be exercising our dogs? From puppies to senior dogs and small to large breeds, our in-house vet, Alison, gives us her walking advice.

We did it! Although the weather seems tumultuous, there are certainly signs of Spring in the air, and with this comes longer walks and a desire to make the most of the sunshine. No adventure is complete without our four-legged friends, and regular exercise together can be a great way to bond, but it can often be difficult to know how much exercise is appropriate. &nbsp;We’ve asked our in-house vet, Alison, to offer her advice on exercising your dog. Just like with their mealtimes, the amount of exercise needed will depend on your dog’s age, breed, and underlying health issues, so don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team if you’d like some tailored guidance

<h2>How much exercise does my Puppy need?</h2> We’ll start with the babies, and if you’re lucky enough to have welcomed a puppy into your home we wanted to start by saying congratulations on your new family member; what an exciting time this is! &nbsp;When it comes to exercise, it’s imperative not to over-exercise them, as their bones and joints need time to mature. For owners of breeds that are prone to Hip and Elbow Dysplasia, such as Labrador Retrievers, pay extra attention to exercise in your puppy.&nbsp;So, what is the best exercise for a puppy, we hear you ask? Play!&nbsp;Playing together at home is a great way to provide both mental and physical stimulation for your puppy. Once they’re fully vaccinated, this can be increased to a short walk, which will help build your puppy’s confidence in socialising with other humans and dogs. Alison suggests avoiding high-impact exercise, such as jumping from heights or making sharp turns when they’re still a puppy.

<h2>How much exercise does my senior dog need?&nbsp;</h2> For our golden-oldies dogs, it’s important to keep regular, moderate exercise in their lives, to maintain muscle mass, joint strength, and a slim body condition as their metabolism slows. This is especially true for senior dogs suffering from arthritis. If your dog struggles with their joints, swimming can be an excellent choice of activity, as it is less stressful on the joints.&nbsp;Some older dogs suffer from Canine Cognitive Dysfunction, which can leave them feeling disorientated, and having less awareness of their senses. For these dogs, it’s important to find ways to exercise that limit any potential anxiety, for example, taking them on short, familiar routes when out on a walk.

<h2>How much exercise do small and toy breed need? </h2> We feed a lot of smaller breeds such as Cockapoos, Cavapoos, Dachshunds and Chihuahuas. Our Toy and small-breed dogs don’t need as much exercise as the larger, sporting breeds, but will still benefit hugely from regular daily exercise. Most breeds will thrive on a couple of shorter walks per day, and if they’re in good health, aim for each walk to be 20-30 minutes.

<h2>How much exercise does my medium to large dog need?</h2> If your dog is a larger breed, or a working dog, such as a Springer Spaniel, Border Collie or Labrador Retriever, you’ll know that they tend to be energetic and need significant amounts of exercise daily. Alison recommends up to an hour and a half of vigorous exercise per day, if your dog is fit and able. If these larger dogs don’t have the opportunity to blow off some steam and head out for exercise, they may show their frustration in the home with behaviours such as chewing, digging or barking. Mental stimulation such as training and other enrichment games can help to tire intelligent breeds such as Border Collies and Labrador Retrievers, so if you don’t already, think about introducing this into their regime.&nbsp;

<h2>How much should I be exercising my dog in hot weather?</h2> Our in-house vet, Alison, recommends avoiding exercising at the hottest times of the day as we head into Spring and Summer, to minimise the risk of your dog developing heatstroke. Look after your pup’s pads by avoiding walking on pavements on hot days, as this can be damaging and always make sure you take fresh water with you to help cool your dog, as they’re unable to regulate their heat through sweating.

<h2>What dog food will fuel my dog for exercise? </h2> Whilst it’s important to know the amount of exercise recommended for your dog, it’s also vital to have the measures in place to help your dog exercise safely, including making sure they’re properly fuelled.
